10. Hanging Back

32.3% of players Hang Back

Hanging Back is when a golfer does not shift their weight correctly back onto the lead side of the downswing. Golfers tend to hang back on their trailing leg and spine through impact. This usually results in a lack of power and the inability to create a consistent strike on the golf ball. Hanging back can also be caused by other swing characteristics such as a reverse pivot or sway.

Hanging Back will usually result in premature release of the wrist angles as the player is trying to advance the club with their arms rather than with the correct weight shift and pivot.

Havint the Hanging Back swing characteristic and not shifting weight correctly on the downswing can be cause by:

   1. S-posture
   2. C-posture
   3. Loss of Posture
   4. Flat Shoulder Plane
   5. Early Extension
   6. Over-the-top

   7. Sway
   8. Slide
   9. Reverse Spine Angle
   11. Casting/Early Release
   12. Chicken Winging

  • Poor strength or power in the trail leg can prevent proper weight shift. If there are any weaknesses in the glutes, adductors, abdominals, etc., on the trail side, players may eliminate the weight shift altogether. This is best checked by performing the Bridge w/ Leg Extension Test and the Leg Lowering Test.
  • Limited mobility or instability in the lead hip can result in the player hanging back. If there are ay weaknesses in the glutes, abductors or abdominals and limited hip internal rotation on the lead side, players may avoid the lead side altogether. Limited mobility or instability is best checked by performing the Single Leg Balance Test, Lower Quarter Rotation Test, Bridge w. Leg Extension Test and the Leg Lowering Test.
  • Poor technique and lack of coordination in rotating the hips can be the underlying cause. This is best checked by the Pelvic Rotation Test.
