As the Aussie 'Superfish', Kieren Perkins, turned for home in
his epic gold medal swim in Atlanta, those words ("We're
Goin' for Gold!") from the pen of Robert Raftery may have been ringing in his
ears.Robert is a gifted poet, songwriter, and philosopher who is involved in a varied
range of business enterprises.
"Laurie Lawrence invited me to write a series of inspirational poems for the
Australian Olympic Team after I Met him in '96", says Robert. "I don't know if I
can take too much credit for the team's great success in Atlanta, but I like to think my
contribution helped a little".
Robert's main studio is an old railway carriage on a small acreage on the outskirts of
Brisbane, where he lives with his wife Kathleen, and their four young children, Jasmine,
Maggie Jade, Zachary and Jacob.
Under the moniker 'Australia's PictureWriter', Robert regularly performs his poems and ballads at
private gatherings, seminars, and conventions. He was a finalist in the Australian
Bicentennial Short Story Competition in 1988, and recently achieved a leading Writer
Status with the Australian Bush Poet's Association.
During the 70's and early 80's Robert's odyssey included periods working in London and
the United States to working underground as an opal miner in the Lightning Ridge gem
fields, then on to manufacturing his own line of paints in Australia.
Eventually Robert succumbed to his greatest passion, and decided to devote as much time
as he could to writing and performing.
"It really is so important to live your dream," says Robert, "... Learn
to dance ... mind and spirit ... to the drum beats ... of the heart."
